BURMA
Burma, or Myanmar as it is called today, occupies the largest area on the South East Asian peninsula and is bordered by China on the north and north east, Laos on the east, Thailand on the south east and the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal to the south while Bangladesh and India are their western neighbors. Burma has been an independent state since 1948, after a 62 year rule under colonial administration.
British Colonial Campaign Furniture can be found in our Burma section. Colonial furniture was made by Burmese craftsman for British families and is often simple in function and design with a British flare. Campaign or "knock down" furniture was created for the British officers to use during their travels across foreign lands. This furniture was almost always made of teak. Its dense nature creates an extremely weather resistant wood perfect for outdoor use as well as inside. All our Burmese furniture is purchased in Thailand.
Burma has 135 ethnic groups, each with its own culture, language and beliefs. We carry a wide variety of Hill Tribe made items such as jewelry, bags, puppets and other crafts.
Burmese culture is a blend of Chinese, Indian and Burmese native traits and characteristics. Buddhism has a great influence on the daily life of the Burmese. The people have preserved the tradition of close family ties, respect for the elders, devotion for Buddhism and simple native dress. Burmese are known for their simple hospitality and friendliness.
