This ceremonial burial transport was used specifically for carrying high-ranking monks on their final journey. The figures on each end are Naga heads (mythological water snakes). The piece is carved from teak wood, finished with gold paint, and adorned with green and mirrored spangles. The cover was replaced after each use. This one of a kind piece, believed to date back to Mandalay times (1752 - 1885), was recovered from a temple in Burma.

Historically, the Chinese have always venerated their ancestors. The Chinese believe that proper worship and honor of ancestors could bring the family health, prosperity, or even children. After a family member passed away, the Chinese would have an ancestor painting made. They believed that the spirit of the deceased actually resided in the portrait itself. The ancestors were usually depicted as nearly life-size in a frontal pose, as seen here.
