VIETNAM

Legend has it that Vietnam's origin lays in the harmonious union of Lac Long Quan, King of the Sea, and Au Co, Princess of the Mountains.  Vietnam was under the domination of Chinese for an entire millennium, which was finally thrown off in the 9th century; therefore Vietnam's traditions and culture were heavily influenced by China.  External control was imposed once again in the 19th century when Vietnam was occupied by the French.  Although many westerners still imagine Vietnam through the lens of war, it is in reality a country filled with captivating natural beauty, newly restricted modern cities and tranquil village life.  Its highlands and rainforest regions, far from being devastated, continue to yield new species and team with exotic wildlife.  Its islands and beaches are among the finest in all of Southeast Asia, and its cuisine is very possibly the most delicious you will ever find.

We obtain our Tibetan collection from traveling Tibetan craftspeople in Northern China.  We offer Tibetan artifacts,Tibetan crafts, antique tankhas, Tibetan collectibles, Tibetan furniture, religious artifacts, and antique and newly produced prayer beads and other items.

Brightly painted Tibetan scenes with tigers and dragons decorate some of our Tibetan cabinets, monk tables, student desks, temple doors, and stools. Tibetan culture is heavily influenced by the Mahayana tradition of Buddhism and is represented on our traditional pieces of furniture. Lotus flowers, conch shells, clouds, lions, mountains, knots of eternity, birds, and other symbols often appear in paintings or as decoration on furniture and religious objects.

China is a beautiful country that has a remarkable history dating back some 3000 years.  Yet many of China's precious artifacts remain uncovered.  Exotic artifacts and art from China has been extremely popular for many years now.  About a fifth of the world's population is Chinese, 1.23 billion, and about 93 percent of them are Han. They originated in the Yellow River basin, the cradle of a highly sophisticated civilization that gradually spread throughout the area now known as China. The term Han is a cultural rather than ethnic identity, shared by people of diverse physical traits, dialects, cuisines and traditions.

We have a wide variety of imports from China, ranging from antique architectural elements and furniture to collectibles, such as opium pipes, porcelain ware, religious artifacts and old household gear and outdoor apparatus which we sell under home decor.   Enjoy browsing through the images on our site to help you visualize the types of unique items that we import.

Chinese antique furniture can be distinguished right away by its simple design and sturdy manual construction from the finest quality woods and metal.  The round brass door closure with brass pin is classic Chinese style.  Much of the furniture was created for the social elite and prosperous classes of China and is refined in style.  During the Cultural Revolution in China, many pieces of furniture were passed on from the elite to the peasant classes.  These pieces were worn down by neglect and by the need to keep the furniture outside due to limited space in their humble homes.  Our Chinese furniture ranges from pieces kept in pristine condition to charming, rustic pieces weathered by time and circumstance.  We also offer a selection of vintage furniture and newly produced pieces at very affordable prices. Our collection holds many chairs, benches, tables, cabinets, architectural elements, scrolls, decorative porcelain and ceramic items.

Burma

Burma, or Myanmar as it is called today, occupies the largest area on the South East Asian peninsula and is bordered by China on the north and north east, Laos on the east, Thailand on the south east and the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal to the south while Bangladesh and India are their western neighbors.  Burma has been an independent state since 1948, after a 62 year rule under colonial administration.

British Colonial Campaign Furniture can be found in our Burma section.  Colonial furniture was made by Burmese craftsman for British families and is often simple in function and design with a British flare.  Campaign or "knock down" furniture was created for the British officers to use during their travels across foreign lands.  This furniture was almost always made of teak.  Its dense nature creates an extremely weather resistant wood perfect for outdoor use as well as inside. All our Burmese furniture is purchased in Thailand.

Burma has 135 ethnic groups, each with its own culture, language and beliefs.  We carry a wide variety of Hill Tribe made items such as jewelry, bags, puppets and other crafts.

Burmese culture is a blend of Chinese, Indian and Burmese native traits and characteristics.  Buddhism has a great influence on the daily life of the Burmese.  The people have preserved the tradition of close family ties, respect for the elders, devotion for Buddhism and simple native dress.  Burmese are known for their simple hospitality and friendliness.
